Fighting for light

When Mr. Milton sat to write
his epics, did he have to fight
tradition or the obligation
to create, or further reputation?

Or did he see by inner light-
more vivid visions than his sight
allowed for in its degradation—
and daily digest inspiration?

It seems unjust to expect night
to yield to sudden noonday’s bright
exposure without hesitation.
We, daily, earn illumination.
